Stand Out from the Crowd-How to Create Favicon for Your Site
This is quite easy to do and has nice impact. With a favicon ( which stands for favourite icon)your site will have a more professional feell and your site will stand out in a long list of bookmarks or favourites, In fact sites without favicons get pushedto the bottom of the favourite’s list - so notm having one can actually hurt you.
What is a Favicon?
A favicon is the little icon or image you see in the address bar of browser or next to address in your favourites. You can easily create your own. First- create or find an image. The resulting favicon is tiny - 16×16 pixel-so the image has to be fairly simple- any detail will be lost in the sizing.
How to Make A Favicon
1) Easiest way I have found to create a favicon is to use a free image editor, irfanview. Download this simple, free program.
2) Using the irfanview application open the image you want to use for you favicon. Then “save as” file name favicon.ico. Note the image type is a windows icon graphic with the extension .ico . The file must be called “favicon.ico” for it to work .
3) Upload your favicon graphic to root directory of your site.
Why Can’t I see My Favicon?
To test your favicon in the designing stages, dump your cache and open a new browser window between tries before bookmarking your site. If you don’t you will just see the same favicon as when you first bookmarked it, as your computer will have cached it in an effort to reduce loading times.
That’s all you need to do! You now have an eye-catching logo representing your web site in the favorites list of all your visitors. A professional touch for very little effort.
