Blog For Money 101 #3 Setting Up Your Blog: Choosing Domain and Host

Choosing Domain Name and Finding a Web Host

I am going to assume you are using Wordpress blog. If you are going to do something different- i strongly advise that you change your mind. Wordpress is by far the best blogging platform available. It is free, easy to use and widely supported.

Dreamhosting : Use the Dreamhosting promo code 101010 when you sign up to get 0.10 discount which bring the cost down to .30 for 1 year subscription. BUT will cost you 9.99/ month when promo ends in a year. I don/t know how long it will be on for.

Wordpress also has some recommendations: Wordpess Friendly Web Hosting

After you have chosen hosting comany- first thing will be to chose a domain name. The is what people type into their browser.
I almost ALWAYS recommend .com vs .org or .whatever . Also avoid hyphens and underscores.. to much room for error when people are linking to you.

Tips on Signing Up with Host and Getting a New Domain

When signing up choose “Private Registrar” option if available. This will keep your name, etc private on WHOIS. – Use and email that you use and plan to keep. Don’t use a web based email account you never check- or a work email that may change. You might get important info about billing or changes and miss it; i.e. your credit card expires and you wake up to find out all your sites are shut down.

After you set up you may have to wait a few hours to be able to use. You will get email with passwords and user names, etc shortly after you sign up. Put these in SAFE place. Print out so you have hard copy somewhere.

If you don’t have one get an FTP client. You will use this to upload your files to your server.
