Google AdSense Video Now Available for Canadian AdSense Publishers

As of last Week Google Adsense has made available video units for Canadian sites.
I have not had enough time to tell how effective ( read profitable) they are. Ideally I would like to pop a small video in a sidebar but the formats are just too large.
With this them ( Networker) the largest image I can place anywhere is has to be less than 400 pixels or theme format is scrambled.

Mission: Organizing The World’s Information (minus everything we didn’t get paid for)

I have been eagerly awaiting the return of one of my favorite bloggers, Andy Beard, who has been away moving house. It has been over 2 weeks since I have had an Andy fix. He’s back. With a vengeance. Andy has the eery ability to see through the BS and pick up things that other marketing bloggers miss or plain ignore.
In his post “Before I deal the FUD “I’m going to ask you to put on your regular user hat” Andy analysis a recent post by Matt Cutts, “Selling Links That Pass Page Rank” .
Note the title of the post… the words are chosen very carefully- “Selling Links That Pass Page Rank” Not paid links. Not sponsored links. Not paid for post links. “Links that pass page rank”. What is the purpose of buying a link or buying link that will pass on page rank to your site? The only reason to do it is to get higher results in the search engine results pages.

Google Created the Paid Link Monster

Google chose to factor links to a web page as one of the corner stones for ranking web pages. In general, the more links from quality sites to a web page, the better. And therein is the problem. Ruud Hein of Search Engine people explains how Google created this grey market of links and the impact in his post, Hilarious PageRank Update Impacts Google Badly.

google handcuffs link sellers
Why does Google want to stop paid links? selling links that pass rank? They are quite serious about stomping out blogs and sites that sell links- in fact- they encourage the reporting of paid links .
Google search is very interested in maintain their credibility. Matt posts here in the “report paid links” post

I even mentioned earlier this year that paid articles/reviews/posts should be done in a way that doesn’t affect search engines.

You can find countless posts the Matt Cutt’s blog on why

“The best links are not paid, or exchanged after out-of-the-blue emails–the best links are earned and given by choice”

IN CHARGE OF ALL THE WORLD’S INFORMATION

google is world organizer of information
Google has laid out quite a task for themselves- their mission is index and catalogue information on the web and be able to serve up accurate results for a searcher researching a topic. No small task. They have put themselves: IN CHARGE OF ALL THE WORLD’S INFORMATION .
Wow. They are looking our for all of us- the searcher and the user and giving us the best possible information available. That is their mission.
They use very complicated and top-secret methods to decide what site is the best site to spew out when you type in a search term into its search box. How many sites are linking to you, what kids of sites are linking to you, how old those sites are, how credible they are, even who owns the site, a link from a site owned by the government or University is more important than a business or individual, for example. They are looking for relevance and quality. Getting your site to have good page rank takes work. SEO’s get paid a lot of money to make sure your site is well designed and easily crawled so your information can be cataloged.

Keeping The Internet Honest

Why go to all this trouble? What is the end result? All of this is done to achieve higher rankings in search engine results pages.
A dog breeder want to be on page one when you look for “dog breeder” . A florist wants to rank for “send flowers” .
Google doesn’t want you to cheat your way to the top. It considers buying links as a way to cheat or game the system.
I understand this. I even applaud this. I am a huge proponent of the Open Directory.

Google takes its mission so seriously that as well as asking you to report paid links- That if it finds out you are selling links that pass on page rank (and increase the chances of a site being higher in the SERPS) it will strip your Page Rank!
paid link seller in jail

This happened to thousands of sites late October 2007. Sites that did not have nofollow tags in links that were “paid” got nailed with a Page Rank ZERO.
They can do this- its their sandbox and they make the rules. However this is where it gets murky for me. Google wants to Organize The World’s Information ... this is why it is zapping those sites that pass on page rank for a fee.

Pay For Top Spots

You don’t have to jump through fiery hoops to get on page one of search engine results pages. You can pay some one. You don’t have to go to the trouble of hiring an SEO or adding pages and pages of content or seek out links. You can pay some one to make sure you are on the SERPS everytime. The same company will even help you protect your investment.
It will make sure that a site “paying” for page rank will not out rank you. You will even appear ON TOP of older sites, more relevant sites. A competitor may not even rank anymore regardless of the value of his information if he was found to be “selling links that pass page rank”.

The whole point of buying page rank is to make to top of search engine results pages. You can pay GOOGLE to place you there. You can pay a fee to have your link ON TOP OF EVERYONE ELSE and get rid of all those other pesky sites trying to do the same things. You don;t have to pay to get page rank and be #1- you can just hand over your cash and Google will put you there.

As for the user?

Well according to Matt Cutt’s when I commented on the apparent hypocrisy of the system:

Lisa, we do think of ads as a type of search and try to show the most relevant ads we can (not just the ones where the advertiser is willing to pay the most). We also apply relevancy tests on whether to show ads on the top vs. the side, so that we only promote ads from the right-hand side to the top slot if we think that they’re very useful.

So.. there ads are relevant to the end uses research process and provide a useful purpose. These are results that are posted at the top of every single search you ever do when you are asking them for the best information.

When you pay Google money for placement on the top of search engine results page it refers to those ads “as a type of search”.
When you pay anyone else other than Google to place in top of the SERP’s your site is no longer relevant and given a Page Rank zero.
This is why the sudden change in semantics. Paid Links are now ” Paying for Links That Pass Page Rank”.

Pump Up Your Amazon Earnings- Huge Increases in Amazon Affiliate Revenue Over Holidays

Amazon Revenue Potential Overlooked- Pump Up Your Amazon Earnings

The bulk of my revenue comes for Google Adsense and Amazon I make some from TLA, Text Link Brokers, advertisers and I have been playing around with Kontera/Chitika and Widgetbucks.
I have been noticing a steady increase in CTRs with Amazon and marked increase in profits. They have skyrocketed since cyber Monday ( day after American Thanksgiving) I was in retail for a long time and pretty much across the board 50% of revenue was made in the Christmas season- during November and December. I made more last month with Amazon Affiliate marketing than I did for the entire year. I made more money the first week of December with Amazon than my Google Adsense earnings for the ENTIRE month of November. A significant amount of money. I have been keeping that in mind when posting over the year and looking at analytics to see what keywords are performing well and placing related amazon product with the post. I have also been placing products reviews throughout the year as well. “Top 10” type lists are great , linking to Amazon or placing Amazon ads in the posts and having whole lists of products. i.e. Best diaper bags, funniest dog books, top books for teachers, dumbest new toys, etc. The whacky, irreverant lists work VERY well. People will click through to see what a product “is” . ie. Grossest blah blah blah, Gifts Men Give That Women Hate the Most. This may sound bit out there – but put your head in “Family Feud” mode to get ideas for your posts and lists.

What Did I do to Increase My Amazon Affiliate Earnings?

Am I some kid of marketing genius? Nope. If I can do it- so can you! Here’s how to increase your Amazon earnings. If you implement some of these now- you will get an instant boost to your commission cheques.

Niche Blog

I mention this over and over again- your blog must have a theme or voice or niche and not be scattered. You are looking for targeted traffic. This is the key to any kind of marketing and advertising. A dog food company will want to advertise on a site that is all about dogs vs. a site about animals vs. site about your life with occasional post about your dog. You are carving out a niche. With a niche site you will have higher quality traffic and better CTRs. Always.

Here are some examples of niche blogs:
Joy Of Christmas Blog Devoted entirely to all things Christmas
http://neasoapworks.blogspot.com/ – Blog on Soapmaking
http://thelactivist.blogspot.com/ Blog about Breastfeeding and Nursing.
AnyThingButIpod Blog about all mp3 players Except Ipods (brilliant- why didn’t I think of this!)

The above blogs can command top dollar for advertising because they are EXPERTS and the bulk of their traffic has predictable behavior.
A site about Christmas will have all kinds of Christmas AdSense Ads on it and a high CTR. People coming to that site will be looking for Christmas-y stuff. A Nursing support site will be a site that attracts moms, pregnant moms-to-be and nursing moms. these moms will be looking for baby gear, baby books. toys, etc.

Soapmaking site will have a market of crafters and soap makers. Products related to Fragrance Oils, packaging, soap making supplies, small home business, etc will all do well here.

Your niche or topic will also have related products. If you are using contextualized advertising then you can see what kind of products advertisers are looking to sell on your site. Google is “scanning” your site for keywords and placing ads it feels best suits your blog/site. The ads are based on keywords- match between advertiser an your site. . An advertiser tell Google what kind of sites it wants- or rather- what keywords it looking for. ( The Flip side of Adsense is AdWords- you may want to sign up if only to get a feel on how the system works)

Deep Links and Embedded Links

Amazon also offers contextualized advertising- but you can’t run both on the same page. Google has changed its TOS recently and you are to place certain kinds of contextual ads within in your site. You can experiment and see what makes you the most money. You can also do your OWN “scanning” and place product link in post on your blog that complement your site. get in the habit of doing this!

There is an okay Amazon Plugin for Wordpress. I used to love it but the have made some changes to it that I don’t like all that much . Give it a try , it does not play well with Internet Explorer however. I ended up using an old version on an old blog that still uses wordpress 2.1.
You can also go to Widgets section for Amazon Affiliates .

Learn what Amazon Affiliate Widgets Can Do

What will work best for your site? The object is to get a visitor to click on that link and buy.. lead them by the hand, They got to your site and landed on a particular post. Put something in the post that they might find interesting. Have cloud in your sidebar that you think will appeal to visitors. Think outside the box and TEST.

A tip for higher Amazon CTR- don’t give too much information about a product or give a sales pitch. Tease your visitor with just enough info that the click the Amazon link to get more information.
Keep your blogs voice “honest” and maintain credibility at all costs.

Deep Linking

Get in the habit of adding a product link or widget to your posts. Over time you will have hundreds of link within your posts. Don’t go nutty on this. You don’t want to come across as an Amazon er.. “professional” . If you are new to Amazon as an affiliate then go over your sites posts and see what products you can add. I am a fan of lowkey text links and not HUGE LEADERBOARD BANNERS, although banners after a longish article work well.

Analyze Your Traffic

Do some basic analytics. You can get some pretty good info from MyBlogLog pro and your hosting company. Better still figure out how to use something like Google Analytics. Look and see what your most popular posts are, Expand on them. If you get huge rush of traffic for your “carrot cake recipe” then do some posts on other kinds of cakes, ways to prepare carrots and other recipes. Use that traffic. Pop in a link or a small product image, Try a cake cookbook or cooking pans. TEST TEST TEST.

Content Development- whats hot?

Look at what is in the news. Check Yahoo Buzz, news sites, social media sites and popular blogs , etc and see what’s in the news. Spin that to fit your blog’s niche. When a popular child’s toy was recalled this year I did a post about it- and listed other “safer” toy alternatives. That post got me a link off of CNN.com and BIG Amazon profits. It still does ;-)

Anticipate Trends

The flip side of what’s writing about what’s hot is being ahead of the game. I am pretty much finished writing about Christmas stuff. I tweak and update and make posts about current trends- but I am looking forward. I am looking for information about Winter and upcoming holidays. I am making lost of posts ( unpublished) about Valentines Day. I will post these after Christmas. I tend to think in Holidays and Seasons from my retail years. Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day, Easter, Spring, etc. and be ahead of the game. Will give me time to get backlinks for these pages and build up page rank in I am months/weeks ahead. I can make adjustments as the season/holiday demands.
You can anticipate trends. Holiday time means any kid of gift idea, recipes, party and entertaining ideas. Winter means winter sports and activities, holiday planning and travel. September mean back to school anything, etc. Also big events like Elections, Olympics, World Series and Super Bowl are predictable and you can anticipate and write about them before during and after.

Social Media Site for Wordpress Themes- WP Themez

What is the Best WordPress Theme?

Wordpess Themez lets members tell you which ones and why. This is not a bad idea. I find WP Theme Viewer and other theme viewing sites difficult to wade through and suspect many of the top download themes stay in the top because its too cumbersome to get to others theme designs.

I am a bit of a theme addict- though lots of looking and very little changing. A relatively new site, Wordpess Themez is one on many niche social marketing sites to emerge in the last few months. It is specifically for wordpress themes and allows members to “vote”, comment and submit wordpress themes. I like it and it has a potential.
